L&T Construction Secures EPC Orders for West Bengal Power Development Corporation

In a recent development, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced its triumphant bid to secure an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract from the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited. This venture falls under the domain of L&T’s Power Transmission & Distribution Business and entails the establishment of wet Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) systems at the Sagardighi thermal power plant located in West Bengal.

L&T: Engineering Powerhouse

This pivotal project comprises the installation of three FGD absorbers designed to serve four thermal power units, specifically 2×300 MW and 2×500 MW capacity. Additionally, the EPC contract encompasses the deployment of various balance of plant systems intended to benefit five units within the power plant, as elucidated by the company in an official press release.

This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for L&T, as it represents their inaugural FGD project secured from a state-owned power utility. The backdrop for this project’s emergence is the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s mandate that necessitates the integration of FGD systems in both existing and forthcoming thermal power plants. This directive is primarily aimed at mitigating sulphur dioxide emissions, thereby bolstering environmental conservation efforts.

With this latest EPC contract in hand, L&T is now poised to undertake FGD projects for thermal power plants boasting a cumulative capacity of over 19 GW. By actively participating in this endeavor, the company aligns itself with the government’s broader initiative to curtail sulphur dioxide emissions and foster a more sustainable and ecologically conscious power generation sector.

On a parallel note, it is worth noting that L&T Construction’s Transportation Infrastructure business vertical has also been making strides in infrastructure development. Recently, they secured a contract to construct a bridge connecting Dahisar and Bhayander in Mumbai. This contract, awarded by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), holds the promise of substantially reducing travel time between these two regions, which currently takes nearly 45 minutes.

The bridge, measuring 4.5 kilometers in length, will feature two separate carriageways and incorporate multi-level interchanges at Dahisar and Bhayander to ensure seamless entry and exit for commuters. Additionally, the project will showcase two large navigational spans along the creek, further enhancing its significance and functionality.

In accordance with L&T’s project classification index, this undertaking falls into the “Large” category, indicative of its substantial scale and magnitude. This project is estimated to have a construction value ranging between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore, underscoring its substantial economic and infrastructural impact on the region.

Following the same, she participated in traditional rituals, including the recitation of Vedic hymns, on the temple stage. The viral video shows the actor wearing a silk saree as she was accompanied by Shikhar and Orry. The two were seen wearing a white mundu as they walked alongside the ‘Dhadak’ actor.

"There's A Guy Named Rishabh Pant": Rohit Sharma Silences England Star On Yashasvi Jaiswal Remark

India captain Rohit Sharma was in no mood to duck bouncers as he attended the press conference on the eve of the 5th Test against England in Dharamsala. Rohit, on being asked about the comment from England batter Ben Duckett about the visiting team taking credit for Yashasvi Jaiswal's attacking heroics, sent a firm 'Rishabh Pant reminder' to everyone. Hitting sixers in the media conference on Wednesday, Rohit had no hesitation in suggesting to the England team, especially Ben Duckett, that they have probably not seen Rishabh Pant bat, hence such a comment was made.

"There was a guy called Rishabh Pant in our team, probably Ben Duckett hasn't seen him play," Rohit said when asked about the comment made by the England batter.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has emerged as India's top-scoring batter in the series, scoring 655 runs in 4 matches so far at an average of 94.57 and a strike-rate of 78.63. Seeing the young India batter deal in boundaries during the Rajkot Test, Duckett had suggested that the England team's 'Bazball' style of play should give credit for encouraging Jaiswal to play the way he has in the series so far.

"When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they're playing differently than how other people play Test cricket," Duckett had said.

It isn't just Rohit who found Duckett's comment deplorable. Earlier, even former England captain Nasser Hussain had blasted the player for his remarks.

"He's not learned from you. He's learned from his upbringing, all the hard yards he had to put in growing up. If anything, lads, look at him and learn from him. I hope there's a little bit of self-introspection going on. Otherwise, it becomes a cult - and, at times, Bazball and this regime has been described as such, where you cannot criticise within or externally," Hussain had said on Sky Sports.

Did Stalin Junior Buy Nivetha Pethuraj A Home In Dubai? Actor Clarifies

Recently, reports on social media claimed that Ms Pethuraj, a certified car racer, is the reason for the Formula 4 Night Street race in Chennai. She was linked with the Chennai race based on unverified news.

A YouTuber, Savukku Shankar, in a YouTube video, even claimed that Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin bought a house in Dubai for the actor.

On Tuesday, the actor clarified the allegation on X and wrote, "Lately there has been false news circulating about money being lavishly spent on me. I kept quiet because I thought people who are speaking about this would have some humanity to verify the information they receive before mindlessly spoiling a girl's life. My family and I have been under extreme stress for a few days. Please think before spreading such false news."

She also wrote about her background and said she has worked in the industry with integrity.

"I come from a very dignified family. I have been financially independent and stable since the age of 16. My family still resides in Dubai. We've been in Dubai for over 20 years. Even in the movie industry, I have never ever asked any producer, director or hero to cast me or give me movie opportunities. I have done over 20 films and it was all that found me. I was and never will be greedy for work or money," Nivetha added.

Rubbishing recent news reports about her as false, she wrote, "I can confirm that none of the information spoken about me so far is true. We live in a rented house in Dubai since 2002. Also, racing has been my passion since 2013. In fact, I had no idea about the races being conducted in Chennai. I'm not as important as you are making it look. I lead a very simple life. After facing a lot of struggles in life I'm finally in a good place mentally and emotionally. I want to continue leading a dignified and peaceful life. Just like any other woman in your family would want."

She said she won't file any legal complaint as she believes that there's still "some humanity left in journalism".

"I am not taking this up legally because I still believe there's some humanity left in journalism, that they won't continue to defame me like this. I request journalists to verify the information you receive before spoiling a family's reputation and not put our family through any more traumas. I'm very grateful to everyone who voiced out for me. May truth behold."

Aunt Collapsed, Called Pujara: Prithi on Rajkot Emergency

Veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had to take a leave of absence after the second day's play of the Rajkot Test against England. Ashwin, who had reached the 500 wickets milestone the same day, addressed the press conference after the end of the final session and immediately jetted off to home. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that it was a 'family emergency' that prompted Ashwin to take a flight back home and it was later found out that the situation had something to do with his mother's health. While Ashwin himself hasn't spoken about the matter yet, his wife Prithi explained the matter in a column she penned ahead of the cricketer's 100th Test.

Aunt Collapsed: Ashwin's Wife Speaks

In her column for the Indian Express, Prithi explained that Ashwin's mother suddenly collapsed, prompting the family to take her to the hospital. But, instead of calling Ashwin, she gave a phone call to Cheteshwar Pujara to figure out the return route for the India off-spinner.

"During Rajkot, the kids had just got back from school when five minutes later, he got to 500. And soon, all of us were on the phone answering all the congratulatory messages.

"It was then that I heard a sudden scream from aunty as she collapsed, and in no time we were at the hospital. At that point, we had decided not to tell Ashwin because there wasn't good flight connectivity between Chennai and Rajkot," Prithi wrote in the column.

"So I dialled Cheteshwar Pujara and his family were of great help. And once we found a way out, I called up Ashwin because after the scans, the doctor suggested it was better to have her son around. Over the phone, he sounded so broken and hung up. It took another 20-25 minutes to process what I told him and for him to call back. And thanks to Rohit (Sharma), Rahul bhai (Dravid) and the others in the team and the BCCI - who followed up all the way till he reached here - he got here late at night," she further added.

Ashwin reached home and saw her mother in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Thankfully, Ashwin's mom recovered, prompting the veteran spinner to take a return flight to Rajkot and join his teammates on Day 4 of the Test.

"It was a very emotional moment for him to see his mom in the ICU. And after she stabilised, we asked him to rejoin the team. Given his personality, he would never leave a game like that. And he would have an extreme amount of guilt if he didn't win the game for his team. Through those couple of days, I realised his yearning for time with his parents is a lot more now and it is coming with age and maturity," she further said in the column.

Electric Vehicles Emit More Particle Pollution Than Petrol, Diesel Cars, Claims Study

As more people become concerned about climate change, there is a growing interest in environmentally friendly transportation options. Many people believe that electric vehicles (EVs) are better for the environment than traditional petrol and diesel cars because they produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

EVs Emit More Particles

However, a recent study by Emission Analytics, a firm that analyses emissions data, challenges this idea. The study, featured in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, brings attention to the problem of particle pollution originating from brakes and tires in both electric and gasoline-powered cars.

The key finding is that EVs, due to their heavier weight, may release significantly more particulate matter from brakes and tyres compared to modern gas-powered vehicles with efficient exhaust filters. The study suggests this could be 1,850 times greater.

The concern lies in tyre wear, with Emission Analytics pointing out that EVs' heavier weight causes tyres to deteriorate faster, releasing harmful chemicals into the air. This is because most tires are made from synthetic rubber derived from crude oil.

The study also highlights the impact of battery weight. EVs typically have heavier batteries compared to traditional gasoline engines. This extra weight puts more strain on the brakes and tyres, accelerating wear and tear.

The report cites the Tesla Model Y and Ford F-150 Lightning as examples, both featuring batteries weighing around 1,800 pounds. The study claims that tyre wear emissions from an EV with a half-tonne (1,100 pounds) battery could be over 400 times higher than exhaust emissions from a modern gasoline car.

While the focus has traditionally been on tailpipe emissions, this study suggests that particle pollution from brakes and tyres needs to be considered when evaluating the environmental impact of EVs.

PM Opens Kolkata's Underwater Metro, Next Stop BJP's Meet On Sandeshkhali

Amid the tug of war between Bengal Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the custody of Sandeshkhali strongman Sheikh Shahjahan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a meeting today at Barasat. Barasat is in the same North 24 Parganas district as Sandeshkhali, an island that has emerged as the biggest talking point in Bengal ahead of the Lok Sabha election.

PM Launches Kolkata's Underwater Metro.

The Prime Minister's event is expected to be attended by some women from Sandeshkhali, which has made national headlines over allegations of sexual harassment, land grab and extortion against local Trinamool leaders led by Shahjahan. The BJP plans to get women from the island to the Prime Minister's event as it slams the Trinamool government over women's safety issues.

The Prime Minister's visit to Bengal comes amid a face-off between the CBI and the state police over the custody of Shahjahan. Arrested after being on the run for 52 days, he has been expelled by the Mamata Banerjee-led party. He is currently with Bengal police, but the BJP has alleged that people of the island will not get any justice till he is grilled by the central agency.

The Calcutta High Court yesterday directed Bengal police to hand over Shahjahan's custody to CBI, noting that "it has become imperative and absolutely necessary for doing complete justice and enforcing the fundamental rights of the public in general and the public of the locality that the cases be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation for investigation".

Soon after, the Trinamool government approached the Supreme Court to challenge the high court order and sought an urgent hearing. The request for an urgent hearing was turned down, and the Bengal government was asked to mention its plea before the Registrar-General for a date, as per rules. The state government has told the Supreme Court that they were given sufficient time to seek legal remedy against the high court order.

Bengal police, meanwhile, refused to hand over the strongman to a CBI team that had reached its office to take custody. The state police maintained that the matter is before the Supreme Court and the handover must take place only after a court ruling.

The BJP is leaving no stone unturned to keep the Sandeshkhali issue alive as it goes into the polls. For the party to achieve its target of winning 370 Lok Sabha seats, it must maximise its wins in Opposition-ruled states such as Bengal. And the serious allegations against Trinamool leaders have come as a great political opportunity for the BJP.

Ahead of the Barasat event, the Prime Minister inaugurated several routes of Kolkata Metro. The highlight is the country's first underwater Metro rail stretch - the train will pass under the surface of the Ganga river. The Prime Minister also took a ride in the Metro, and visuals showed him chatting with a group of schoolgoers.

"If Indians Can Be Proud...": Singer On Spanish Tourist's Gang-Rape

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has reacted to the alleged gang-rape of a Spanish tourist in Jharkhand's Dumka district and said that all Indians should be "ashamed" by the incident.

Indignation on Tourist's Gang-Rape.

The woman from Spain was allegedly gang-raped at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area last Friday when she was spending the night in a makeshift tent along with her husband. The couple had reached Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles and was en route to Bihar and then Nepal.

Taking to her official X account, Ms Sripaada said, "If all Indians can be proud when 'few' Indians win an Olympic medal, all Indians can also be ashamed when 'few' men rape."

Actors Dulquer Salmaan and Richa Chadha were also among those who expressed shock over the alleged gang-rape and demanded that perpetrators be brought to justice.

Mr Salmaan said he was "crushed" to hear the news.

"You both recently visited Kottayam where close friends hosted you for a meal. This should not happen to anyone anywhere (sic)," the actor wrote on his Instagram Story.

Ms Chadha termed the act "shameful".

"Indians are treating foreigners like they treat their own women. Shame on our rotten society," she said.

The police have arrested eight people in connection with the case.

The Spanish woman on Tuesday said that she has no complaints against the people of India as she has safely travelled around 20,000 km across the country.

Speaking to reporters before leaving for Nepal via Bihar along with her husband on their motorcycles, she said she would continue her world tour.

"People of India are nice. I don't blame the people, but I blame the criminals. People of India have treated me very well, and were very kind to me," the 28-year-old woman said.

"We chose the place for the night stay because it was calm and beautiful. We thought it would be okay if we lived there alone," she said.

The woman said that she has been travelling for more than six years.

"We have been in India for the last six months and travelled around 20,000 km. We did not have any problems anywhere. This has happened for the first time," she said.

"I have good memories from India," she added.
